3M GRIT: Creativity and Innovation Community of Practice”

Curious, passionate, altruistic and PROVOCATIVE. What do all of these have in common? These are the characteristics to describe a creativity and innovation community of practice at 3M of change agents focused on raising the innovation level within 3M. Kim Johnson, is the corporate catalyst who led this grass roots revolution with a vision to empower the creative potential of all individuals within 3M, across business units and across career paths. Using the Innovative Organization framework from Dr. Charlie Prather, the 3M Grass Roots Innovation Team (GRIT) engages in activities around three core areas: the culture/environment/climate, education, and real world application.

Kim has over 15 years experience in grass roots related efforts that vary from project management to new product development to creativity and innovation. Her role while at 3M ranged from a corporate project consultant and facilitator, as well as efforts directed at organizational transformation and knowledge transfer revolving around communities of practice, and change management directed toward a focus on creating a learning organization. Kim has consulted and networked with industry counterparts such as Dupont, P&G, Corning, Texas Instruments, Hewlett Packard, MDS-SCIEX, Kodak, American Express Financial Advisors, Scotts Company, Medtronic and numerous others.
