It's an absolutely plausible explanation. There's a lot of other evidence that we solve tough problems below the level of consciousness, i.e., give your brain the space to be creative and it will! Wouldn't surprise me, then, if daydreaming is the ...

Marc, I have not had an opportunity to do this in a while, but I would say there was a mixture of reluctance and relief...some were hesitant to move out of their comfort zones (which is why those old ideas kept coming up in the first place), while...

I do poetry workshops occasionally and also write. When it comes to my writing, I basically can't write a decent word unless I'm in a big city. Coffee shops help a lot, too. I think it's the sensory overload that allows me the 'freedom' to engage ...

Awesome! I love this idea.

I just watched Tim facilitate a client group to converge an idea list in a way that led them to the craziest idea. They were in 3 tables, and he asked each table to pick the two nuttiest ideas on the list (that he'd had them squeeze out during the...

Krista and Rob, And what results have you had? Do people go for the frightening? And how do you get people to decide on which ideas to keep pursuing?

I've taken to heart Tim's advice to encourage participants to focus on the groupings that pull at your gut, seem dangerous, are intriguing, seem to require creative solutions, seem impossible. After all, people come to brainstorming because they'r...

Rather than grouping ideas based on some sort of similarity indicator, I have asked groups to first sort them by "old - things we've thought of or done before" and "new - ideas we've never considered." Then the conversation/process continues, movi...

Hey Marc,

Just letting you know I am searching for the reference...I know it's here somewhere.... This is not the reference but it is relevant and somewhat interesting: http://www.plosone.org/article/info:doi/10.1371/journal.pone.0001459

The book is coming along a bit slow at the moment because my partner and I are getting ready to expand our business. We've got a booth at the upcoming SHRM Annual Conference in Chicago and have put so much work into it (including some great gigs with local companies). We're also getting married in a couple months as well :-).

However, I have put together a research-oriented paper that we might include in the book. I'll send you a copy.

What's up with you? Love the picture of the kids (they're really cute)? Is all going well in the beautiful south?

Ask a Neuroscientist

At the next Mind Camp (yes, I know it's a year away but I like to start early), I'm hoping to do a session on The Neuroscience of Creativity. I've been trying to decide what content should be in the presentation and then it hit me, maybe it's better to let others ask the questions and then I'll do my best to bring answers, or at least confessions of ignorance. So tell me... what is it you want to know about the brain and creativity?
