Thank you for this, Michael. You have given me a special lens through which to see and understand my inherent nature to make it a good day.

You and I are going to die

You and I are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been standing in our place but who will never see the light of day outnumber the atoms in the universe. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater playwrights than Shakespeare, greater scientists than Newton, greater composers than Beethoven, greater artists than Van Gogh, greater minds than Einstein. We know this because… Continue

The trolley problem

A trolley is running down a track out of control. If it keeps going, it will run over the five unsuspecting people hanging out on the track. You can prevent this disaster by throwing a switch, redirecting the trolley onto a siding where it will kill one person. Do you hit the switch?
.
Most people say that that’s OK, not great, but OK. Now suppose I change the problem slightly. You’re watching the first drama unfold from a footbridge and the only way to save the five people from certain death is… Continue

Toasting the new year with hot water

I recently participated in a session with a number of politicians of different parties about reform of the political process. After the session, I discussed my disappointment with the results with Father Tom, a Franciscan monk who taught political science at St. Bonaventure University. I told him how I had discussed the issue with many in the group before the session, and I knew they had many ideas, including many unusual and unique. Yet they held back and offered only the same old conservative… Continue

What I have learned from celebrities, politicans and other prominent people and organizations

I have learned valuable lessons from watching and listening to celebrities, politicians, prominent people and organizations in our society. Some of the things I have learned are:

I have learned toleration from the intolerant Perez Hilton.
I have learned silence from the talkative Rush Limbaugh.
I have learned value from the scam artist Bernie Madoff.
I have learned the merits of an education from Paris Hilton.
I have learned unselfishness from the Reverend Al Sharpton.
I have learned love from… Continue

Mind Your Own Bees Wax

Personal hygiene left much room for improvement in the old colonial days. As a result, many women and men had developed acne scars by adulthood. The women would spread bee's wax over their facial skin to smooth out their complexions. When they were speaking to each other, if a woman began
to stare at another woman's face she was told, "mind your own bee's wax."

Should the woman smile, the wax would crack, hence the term "crack a smile" In addition, when they sat too close to the fire, the wax w… Continue

Thank you MIchael for the lovely words. Sharing some of my photographs on the HUB has had surprising results: some people have actually noticed them!

If you haven't yet, consider rating your favourites. That would be useful information for me.

Greetings from Sydney, Australia Michael - thank you for stopping by my pages and your lovely compliment.

The name came about after a successful two seasons as the Hostess of a singer/songwriter night in Manly. It was a nick name attributed to me by the artists, and for that raison one to which I have become very attached.

A pleasure to make your acquaintance Michael.

Michael thanks for helping with the questions. - just an aside: I believe Helen Keller got ill about a year or so after birth which then caused her blindness. Loved the question!

Michael,
On a post to Rob (Jacobs) you described yourself as a cynic.
Surely not - you jest!

Our hope must be that we'll find a way, thinking our way, to solutions. Isn't it a question of where we best plant the seed?

Sure, there is a great deal to this, the finding of workable and proven solutions.
However, as you say, many of the answers have already been developed at grass roots level. Now the growth needs to be nurtured.

Michael, I say this with all honesty. It was your book Thinker Toys and Edward De Bono's book that changed my teaching and got me interested in world of creativity. Somewhere in California there is a group of students who spent their days learning how to SCAMPER, how to use the Lotus Blossom, etc. Even now, that I am in administration, a my trusty copy of Thinker Toys sits on my desk. You personally have been a major inspiration for me as a teacher, a leader, and as person. I would include Tim Hurson as well. Thank you for your contribution to my teaching and my thinking.

Just saying hello and to let you know that my husband, Mark, and I are looking in and love what you have done and are doing.

Perhaps we will get a chance to exchange a few thoughts down the line. Our areas of interest are 'education' (me) and 'care and health - especially mental health’ (Mark).

The genius of creative thinking, imparting to others how best to 'do it' and how to facilitate it, cut across everything, so there’s a lot to learn and a lot to think about when it comes to where to apply a bit of creative thinking genius.

The thing that interests us most is how best to get messages across that will let the thinkers in. Seems that we have to let things go wrong before we need to come up with solutions to fix the problems by applying a bit of creativity and ideation. We’d like to see such issues ‘headed off at the pass’, so that we avoid the problems ever occurring.

Idealism shines in a light of its own and is much scoffed at as unattainable (or, to the uncouth, referred to as “bullshit”). It would be good to avoid or re-educate the bullshit merchants (or so my husband says)

As an infrequent visitor to the Hub, I will join whatever debate I can as and when I can prioritise it into my days.

Michael,

In Cracking Creativity it is stated that "The goal of this book is to describe these thinking strategies and show how we can apply them to become more creative in our work and personal life". In your recent reply to ADenike it came across to me that we don't know how to "heighten creativity" and the best we know is to stand out of the way of the inherently creative - I definitely agree with the importance of "standing out of the light" and we do have operational mechanisms for learning and heightening creative ability.

In light of these apparent contradictions/paradoxical statements what is your perspective? Do you believe creative thinking is learnable/enhanceable? Is there a way to stand out of the light while providing some of the electrons?

in curiosity,
Garth
