Do we really need New things or would we be better off focusing on Better things we already have?

You and I are going to die, and that makes us the lucky ones. Most people are never going to die because they are never going to be born. The potential people who could have been standing in our place but who will never see the light of day outnumber the atoms in the universe. Certainly those unborn ghosts include greater playwrights than Shakespeare, greater scientists than Newton, greater composers than Beethoven, greater artists than Van Gogh, greater minds than Einstein. We know this because…

Apple Computers has been an interesting company to watch over the last 30 years or so. While tons of computer companies have come and gone (remember Amiga’s, Atari’s, or even Wangs?), few have actually lasted as long as this venerable educational technology company. And don’t be fooled, Apple is indeed an ed tech company. Almost every product they make turns out to have a education connection. Remember when the iPod came out? Just a music player eh? Then, about six months passed and all of a sud…

A trolley is running down a track out of control. If it keeps going, it will run over the five unsuspecting people hanging out on the track. You can prevent this disaster by throwing a switch, redirecting the trolley onto a siding where it will kill one person. Do you hit the switch?
.
Most people say that that’s OK, not great, but OK. Now suppose I change the problem slightly. You’re watching the first drama unfold from a footbridge and the only way to save the five people from certain death is…

Pen your own obiturary!
Yes, it may seem like a strange exercise, but writing about oneself in the past tense can force an honest reckoning, help conquer fears, and bring goals into focus. It's not about death, but rather about life itself.
Seeing one's accomplishments, milestones and relationships condensed into a few paragraphs is also a way of gauging where there is room for improvement. It can help us to define what our sense of life purpose is, and can be a very helpful anchor point. Addi…

There's a 2-letter word in the English language that has an incredible number of meanings, and that is UP.
It's easy to understand UP, meaning UP in the sky, or UP at the top of the list, but when we awaken in the morning, why do we say we wake UP?
At a meeting, why does a topic come UP? Why do we speak UP and why are officers UP for election and why is it UP to the secretary to write UP the minutes of the meeting?
We call UP our friends. And we use decorations to brighten UP a room. We polish…

I am sad to report I will not be attending Mind Camp again this year.
Last year I left Mind Camp with a better understanding of myself and the direction I wanted to take my career in. I have taken that leap and found myself working in an exciting, fast-paced job that shares the creativity of the world with the city of Toronto through Film.
As I will be engrossed in my Toronto International Film Festival work during September, I will be unable to bust my butt up north to enjoy the fabulous work…

In Malcolm Gladwells' article
How David Beats Goliath he shares an oft shared strategy basically declaring the most effective way for the underdog to win is by breaking the rules. He talks about the value of not knowing the rules, challenging rules you do know, creating new rules and repeating the process with the new rules you create.
Of particular interest to me is the underdog strate…

I recently participated in a session with a number of politicians of different parties about reform of the political process. After the session, I discussed my disappointment with the results with Father Tom, a Franciscan monk who taught political science at St. Bonaventure University. I told him how I had discussed the issue with many in the group before the session, and I knew they had many ideas, including many unusual and unique. Yet they held back and offered only the same old conservative…

For one day on June 10, Israeli newspaper
Haaretz asked 31 of Israel’s finest authors and poets to cover the day’s news, and sent most of his regular reporters home. From the Jewish Daily Forward (an on-line newspaper):
"The idea behind the paper’s June 10 special edition was to honor Israel’s annual Hebrew Book Week, which opened the same day, by inviting Israeli authors to get away from their forthcoming novels and letting them bear witness to the events of the day.
"This wasn’t a…

There are so many Twitter debates and exchanges happening that I already feel a bit tired of them. Twitter is a tool. It does some things well, others not so well, and many things not well at all. There is no insight in this statement. It applies to all tools. The fact that 'tools' can be plural means that there are more than one of them, quite a few, in fact.
I confess I've always loved the Swiss Army knife and have owned, lost, found, and been cut by them (my own fault) since I was six years…

Daydreaming – is it wasteful, unavoidable, harmless? Try productive!
To our list of misconceptions about the face of real productivity, we can now add the following, from a study published recently by the National Academy of Sciences:
"Daydreaming is an important cognitive state where we may unconsciously turn our attention from immediate tasks to sort through important problems in our lives."

I have learned valuable lessons from watching and listening to celebrities, politicians, prominent people and organizations in our society. Some of the things I have learned are:
I have learned toleration from the intolerant Perez Hilton.
I have learned silence from the talkative Rush Limbaugh.
I have learned value from the scam artist Bernie Madoff.
I have learned the merits of an education from Paris Hilton.
I have learned unselfishness from the Reverend Al Sharpton.
I have learned love from…

Four West Salem, Oregon High School students have won first place in a national science competition for a project that imagines paint that can "talk."
The science and technology competition for students in grades K-12 asks students to
research existing technology and create innovative ways to use that technology in the future.
The Salem students won for their project called S.M.A.R.T Paint, a special paint that could help detect black ice, sense fires, prevent pressure tank explosions, and ref…
